Today, we are riding the train up to Brooklyn, NY to record some live vinyl sessions. I’ve got my octave mandolin as a carry-on, a copy of DUNE to read, and an unruled Moleskine notebook. The opportunity of this trip and these items in tote remind me of how grateful I am for art in the world—and the affordance to play long-traditioned music, witness deeply imaginative world building through film and literature, fill blank pages with lines that have meaning. These beautiful, tactile, otherworldly yet thisworldly things that make the present our own. The ones that we feel beneath our skin, that coax out the shy tears, that knock away the cobwebs and bring color.
It’s super exciting and maybe a little nerve wracking to go into a new studio in new city and record directly onto something as special and tactile and analog as a 7” vinyl. Honestly, I feel a lot less nervous thanks to all of the warmth and love that we felt at our past two shows last week in Richmond and Fredericksburg, VA <3 Thank you. In a time where digital is available everywhere, I hope these vinyl sessions can be a small way to listen to a moment recorded just for you—without having to type or see anything on a glass screen, and without any algorithmic entity ever knowing about it. :)
So off we go! To the big city—we’ll come back with stories to tell (already got a couple on deck) and a whole lot of songs etched to vinyl! Details below on how to order one if you would like one. Bonus is that you get a free Saturn Frog t-shirt with your order :) Little less than 24 hours left!
JUNIPER TREE UPDATES
Today is the last day for vinyl session orders!
We are traveling up to Brooklyn, New York today! TOMORROW, 3/7, we will record a handful of unique, live session, direct-to-vinyl singles. Each vinyl will be lathe-cut as we record a personal message and then play a one-of-a-kind performance of a song of your choosing. I love the way Leesta Vall describes it as like a Polaroid but for music! Check it out and learn more here: https://leestavall.com/products/junipertree
Today (March 6th) is the last day to make a preorder! We’d love to make one of these for you :)
INSPIRATION LATELY
The birds in our yard are heralding the shifting season and their songs spark some new kind of joy in me every day.
BEFORE YOU GO,
A POEM FOR THE ROAD:
Fisherwoman (A refrain)
Beneath my thinking, leagues beneath, and I mean leagues, I sense a refrain. Wouldn’t I like to know it word for word Wouldn’t I know it's as comprehensible as whale song would be to me if I were to slip beneath the surface and listen. Beneath the surface is the line I cast I wait so ready to see the shimmering wiggle of the thin clear string. Ocean, if I hook it, I promise— I will learn it by heart, then throw it back again and again and again.
